On-demand services differ significantly from regular public transport: they do not follow a timetable with fixed routes and stops but offer passengers a flexible door-to-door service and can transport them individually from their location to their desired destination.

While on-demand transport in rural areas often serve as a reliable feeder to existing regular services, they provide a supplement to public transport in the city on the so-called "last mile".
